Significant improvement

in working capital

Four core processes

optimized in Europe

AI agents

automating end-to-end workflows

With Celonis delivering value across four core processes in Europe, Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) are now using the platform to orchestrate AI agents and execute end-to-end workflows. Next, the leading manufacturers of sustainable packaging aim to build on their European success by expanding Celonis use to other regions.

AMP operate 23 metal beverage can production facilities in nine countries, employing approximately 6,500 people with sales of approximately $5.5bn in 2025. A partner of choice for beverage companies, AMP are known for outstanding quality and customer service and are the only pure-play metal beverage can producer of scale in the market today.

AMP have a complex manufacturing and supply chain footprint that brings multiple challenges. These include continual cost pressures, a need to optimize working capital and standardize processes across regions, inconsistent data quality, and an over reliance on manual work.

Today, Celonis helps AMP address these challenges in Europe, with over 500 users already using the platform in Procurement, Accounts Payable (AP), Inventory Management, and Master Data. AMP are co-innovating with Celonis on AI-enabled process execution and looking to expand use of the platform into other regions.

Connecting the dots across Procure-to-Pay

Celonis was initially introduced in Procurement to help AMP avoid unnecessary emergency orders and use internal stock more effectively, preventing value leakage across manufacturing plants.

Ralf Weidenbach, Director IT Applications, is a key proponent of Celonis within AMP and he explains, “Starting in Procurement allowed us to demonstrate tangible business outcomes quickly, build trust with stakeholders, and establish a repeatable blueprint for expanding into business-critical and cross-functional processes.”

In parallel, Celonis was introduced to AP to improve visibility, reduce duplicate invoice risk, and address blocks in the payment process. Using the platform, AMP were able to reduce manual effort, streamline invoice and payment processing, and respond to supplier questions more quickly.

To gain visibility across Procurement and AP, AMP moved from case-centric to object-centric process mining (OCPM). By connecting relevant business objects (like purchase orders, goods receipts, invoices, credit memos, and payments) teams can understand why payments are late, where exceptions arise, and which actions will deliver the greatest business impact.

Ralf Weidenbach, Director IT Applications

“By moving to OCPM, we’re able to connect Procurement and AP for end-to-end visibility, integrate AP automation into the broader P2P process, and provide better transparency on topics such as late payments and exception handling.”

Optimizing inventory

To date, AMP have realized the greatest value in Inventory Management – specifically spare parts optimization. Celonis provides plants with real-time visibility of consumption, reorder points, min/max levels, obsolete or slow-moving stock, and availability of spare parts in other plants.

First, AMP rapidly improved cash flow by reviewing and optimizing reorder points as well as minimum / maximum stock levels. Next, the company addressed missed or untaken opportunities, where plants place external orders for parts without first checking existing availability. Weidenbach expands, “Celonis tells the requester when the material already exists in another plant and is obsolete there, so they can order it internally. This leads to significant improvements in working capital.”

By using Celonis for Inventory Management, AMP can:

  • Minimize spare parts inventory and optimize working capital
  • Monitor working capital in real time to prevent slippage
  • Improve master data quality with the Duplicate Material Checker app

From process insight to AI-driven execution

Celonis is critical to AMP’s Enterprise AI strategy, providing the intelligence layer AI agents need to act with context.

Ralf Weidenbach, Director IT Applications

“Without process context, AI risks becoming isolated experimentation instead of operational improvement.”

Activating write-back from Celonis to AMP’s ERP system is a major step forward for AI deployment. It moves the partnership beyond process monitoring into process execution, where AI agents can recommend, trigger, and automate actions within the operational workflow.

AMP and Celonis have co-innovated on two transformative use cases with agentic AI:

  1. An AP agent that uses information from Celonis to communicate with suppliers and answer vendor queries about invoices and payments.
  2. A P2P agent that extracts information such as delivery dates from supplier emails to update the ERP system.

AMP are also looking to use Orchestration Engine to manage a team of AI agents across the entire P2P process, from purchase requisition to invoice-to-be-paid. The goal is to automate as much of this end-to-end process as possible, improving productivity, enabling faster supplier response times, and providing multilingual support.

Two Celonis AI hackathons in Madrid and London provided inspiration for these use cases, demonstrating the practical potential of agent-based AI in Finance operations. Given the impressive outcomes, Weidenbach says, “I would like to run our own internal AI hackathons to deeply engage our business teams, generate practical use cases, and accelerate adoption of AI-driven process automation.”

Expanding across the business and the globe

The focus now is on scaling the proven European model into other regions, using the same KPI discipline for Procurement, AP, Inventory Management, and Master Data use cases.

Ralf Weidenbach, Director IT Applications

“The ultimate vision is to make Celonis a global process intelligence layer for AMP: one platform that shows how key processes run, highlights value opportunities, supports compliance and governance, and enables AI-driven automation where it makes sense.”

With its value already proven, there’s also demand to expand the use of Celonis into other areas of the business. “A positive surprise was how quickly the conversation changed from IT pushing reports to the business pulling insights and colleagues asking for more use cases,” says Weidenbach.

The first major expansion area will be Accounts Receivable (AR), where AMP see potential to improve cash visibility, reduce manual follow-up, prioritize customer-related actions, and better manage working capital.

According to Weidenbach, “Celonis is a game-changer because it connects data, process transparency, value tracking, and execution. The outstanding Celonis team works closely with us to bring new ideas, challenge our thinking, and help turn process intelligence into real business outcomes.”
